AIDS / HIV

The HIV/AIDS Peer Educators consists of students that have been certified and licensed by the Miami Dade County Public Schools HIV/AIDS Education program to teach about HIV/AIDS. These licensed student educators create interactive presentations to teach their peers about reducing high risk activities. They also encourage them to make healthy behavior choices. The goals of the peer educators are to increase knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS, empower students with the skill building knowledge to make better health choices, and to improve peer relations while becoming active members in the HIV/AIDS community. In order to become a certified peer educator students must attend a one day course and pass the certification exam.

The IBHS Mentoring Minds Club offers support to students struggling with academic work or who are just overwhelmed and stressed by the academic and social pressures at Gables. Mentors meet regularly with students to tutor in specific subject areas or assignments. The club is actively involved in community projects partnering with Miami Childrens’ Hospital and a poor rural school district in Honduras. Socials are held after school where mentors and their mentees can meet informally to relax, socialize meet old and make new friends and just have a good time.
